Plus, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the debut of Star Trek, Elliott and Keith talk about their favorite Star Trek moments.

Last week Elliott Serrano and Keith Conrad expressed their concern with Chief O'Brien's lack of career advancement in Star Trek; The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, which got them wondering: If there isn't any money in the future in Star Trek, would there be any career advancement at all? How exactly would the world work without money? Would it actually be any better?

An email from a listener has Elliott and Keith wondering about Chief O'Brien's career in Starfleet before he showed up on the USS Enterprise. Plus, has the movie version of Steve Rogers put down his Captain America shield for good? In an interview with The Huffington Post, directors Joe and Anthony Russo set the record straight on exactly where Steve (Chris Evans) stood philosophically at the end of the film. “I think him dropping that shield is him letting go of that identity,” said Joe. “[It’s] him admitting that certainly the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making.” Steve can’t be the dutiful soldier anymore, not after all he’s seen.

Sad news in the sci-fi world this week, as Kenny Baker the actor who brought R2-D2 to life in Star Wars died at the age of 82. Also, in the Star Wars world, the second trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story premiered during the Olympics. The geek world reacted with the predictable amount of joy. Plus, more details are starting to emerge about CBS's new online Star Trek series. Most notably, the main character will be both female and not the captain, which will be a first in the Star Trek universe. This got Keith Conrad and Elliott Serrano talking about which Star Trek supporting characters should have had their own show.

NBC and ABC seem to have gone full boat in tinkering with the Space-time continuum with their new shows this fall. Elliott and Keith agree that Timeless and Time After Time both look interesting, but network TV could have done something a little better if they wanted to tackle time travel. Speaking of television, Disney head honchos are once again dropping hints that there could be a live-action Star Wars show headed to the small screen. Elliott is skeptical, because of the cost involved in doing it right, but Keith may have a possible solution. Also, it appears there may be a figure from the Star Wars prequel trilogy showing up in Rogue One. Plus, Suicide Squad hit theaters over the weekend. It seems like people loved or hate it. Elliott shared which side of the fence he comes down on.

As expected, there has been a massive amount of news coming out of San Diego during Comic Con. Elliott and Keith read the tea leaves from the fan fest. Plus, Elliott and Keith both had very low expectations for Star Trek Beyond, and they both came away very surprised. The words "eating crow" were thrown around.

The Star Trek family was rocked by the sudden death of actor Anton Yelchin over the weekend in a freak car accident. Meanwhile, the rest of the cast is getting ready for the promotional push ahead of the release of Star Trek Beyond. Chris Pine said that, while the JJ films have tried to touch on “demanding questions and themes”, it’s just not possible to make a movie without “wham-bam explosions and planets blowing up”. Chris Pine spoke about how Star Trek can compete in the modern cinema marketplace. “You can’t make a cerebral Star Trek in 2016. It just wouldn’t work in today’s marketplace. You can hide things in there – Star Trek Into Darkness has crazy, really demanding questions and themes, but you have to hide it under the guise of wham-bam explosions and planets blowing up. It’s very, very tricky. The question that our movie poses is “Does the Federation mean anything?” And in a world where everybody’s trying to kill one another all of the time, that’s an important thing. Is working together important? Should we all go our separate ways? Does being united against something mean anything?” Elliott and Keith discuss whether or not movie audiences can wrap their heads around big ideas in 2016, while Keith wonders if Star Trek was ever really all that cerebral to begin with.
