Uncharted territory is where guest Jason Holman found himself when he chose a career in wine over one in the law. He just couldn’t see himself building a life around the Juris Doctorate degree he’d just earned. After a stint at Napa’s Kongsgaard dragging hoses, cleaning tanks and performing punchovers, aka “cellar rat” duties, he knew he’d found his calling. Thus began his adventures traveling the globe to learn about winemaking.
In part 2 of the podcast interview with Jason Holman, the co-hosts received a master class in natural winemaking. Tasting through Jason’s flagship brand, Uncharted Wines, the group sampled a few of his red wines. In keeping with his use of unusual varietals, secluded vineyards, and unconventional production techniques, Jason shared tales and tastes of his Carignan and Tempranillo, varieties seen far less frequently in winery portfolios than typical reds such as Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Another departure from typical winery models is Jason’s shared tasting room, Rebel Vintners, in downtown Napa, where you can frequently find him or his winemaker partners behind the bar. Rebel Vintners offers something for everyone…including your kids! (Jason’s own kids participate in learning about the business, but they’re also young kids. So the three Rebel Vintner partners provide space for kids in their tasting room just like their own.) Find toys, games, puzzles and more to keep the youngsters entertained while you sip and sample the many wines available to taste or purchase. For the adults, there’s the wine bar, a reading and conversation nook with deep, plush armchairs. Finishing out the tastefully appointed space are the requisite big screens if you’re dying to stay on top of the latest big game.
Most unusually, you’ll find the winemakers behind the bar! What better way to learn about these natural wines than from the winemaker himself?!
