Laura Schermeister is the consummate storyteller, a good skill to have when you have so many stories of great drama: Girl picks up stakes to move cross-country to wine country. Boy pursues live-long dream to open his own winery. Girl and Boy meet. Boom! Love at first (or second) sight.
There’s much more to this story, filled with drama (California wildfires!) and quickly adapting to rapidly evolving circumstances (again, wildfires!). You’ll need to listen to Laura tell the story on our show this week to hear all about it.
Not only did we get to hear her own journey and that of her husband, Robert, who’d made cult wines for Mark Aubert and Jayson Pahlmeyer, but we also got to taste a few of these premium, small-batch wines.
In 2012, Robert Schermeister took the plunge and made 125 cases of Napa Valley Pinot Noir under his own label, Schermeister Winery, using the native fermentation techniques he mastered under his mentors. He acquired licenses, bonds, and a website domain. This was the beginning of fulfilling a dream bigger than he ever imagined.
Fast forward as the two meet to discuss Laura building his website…and the meeting lasted six hours. The rest, as they say, is history.
Now with a beautiful tasting room and patio overlooking a creek, a loyal club – the Magnus Vinum Society, and a portfolio of stunning, small-batch wines, the Schermeisters are making waves in the wine world.
During the show, Laura took us through tasting three of their wines: the 2017 Chardonnay from Antica Vineyard on Atlas Peak in Napa Valley, the 2018 Viognier from the Salomon Vineyard in Sonoma Valley, and the 2017 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir from the Terra de Promissio Vineyard. All use wild fermentation to express the true nature of the vineyard and its unique terroir.
